ALPA, Air Lines Pilots Association, is the central figure in the history of organizing pilots into a union. It was and remains the biggest influence on the conditions under which pilots fly.

ALPA is celebrating its 80th birthday this year. It was formed in 1931 when the name as established.
Notably, it was 1934 when the National Labor Board issued its decision setting the maximum hours flown per month at 85 hours. A base pay was set at $1,600 per year with hourly and mileage pay increments.
