Sunday Trivia: Foreign Aircraft and AA
American Airlines has had a pretty curious fleet at times and they’ve tried out more than one dud in their fleet as well. Two such examples are the Convair CV-990 and the MD-11. Neither really worked out that well for AA.
American has also owned a variety of foreign aircraft over the years and has just announced it’s buying foreign again in the form of the Airbus A320 family.
Can you name the 4 foreign aircraft families American has previously owned? The answer after the fold:
Most of you know that American owned the Airbus A300 aircraft and actually operated it very profitably for a fair period of time. Some of you know that they also owned and operated the Fokker 100 aircraft which also proved to be fairly profitable as well (until Fokker went out of business and couldn’t support AA.)
What many don’t know is that AA also has had a British connection. They owned and operated BAC 1-11 aircraft quite successfully and they owned BAe 146-100 regional jets. Of all of their “foreigned produced” aircraft, the BAe 146 was the only one that didn’t really enjoy long term success at AA. That aircraft came as a part of American’s purchase of Air California.
